Issues

Growth

The growth pressure on the County and our resources is unprecedented. While many residents feel growth is inevitable, this doesn’t mean that local government should not manage and direct growth for the long term benefit of our community. For years, development has driven our community. Wally believes it is time for our community to develop a vision for the future and guide development in a fashion that will benefit us all. As a community, through more effective land use regulations, we can begin to manage development in a sustainable fashion. It is a fact that runaway growth does not create community, it consumes community. Unchecked growth consumes our natural resources, water, land, wildlife habitat, the things that make this county a beautiful place to live IN as well as a magnet for others seeking to relocate here. With the implementation of a community dialogue and improved land use regulations, we can plan for our future and our children’s future so La Plata County can retain the beauty and natural resources that we all wish to continue.

Oil and Gas

We must now begin to consider how to compensate for the declining tax revenues from the O&G industry that has sustained our budget for many years. Replacing these tax revenues is of critical importance in order to maintain and improve the services we currently enjoy. In addition to continued and improved local enforcement of current regulations, we need to support more balanced representation on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC). Wally will work hard to further strengthen the foundation of local regulation that Josh Joshwick and the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has in place. A mutually beneficial working relationship is important for both the county and the industry.

WATER

Water is essential to planning for future growth and development, and will become even more so. We must consider various ways that local government can help provide water to residents so we can implement a sustainable, beneficial growth model that will preserve our natural resources for generations to come. A rural water system would be of great benefit to residents but careful planning is essential to ensure a strategy that would enhance both our community and our economy.

INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

In order to develop a long range community-based vision for La Plata County’s future, a positive working relationship with the county, City of Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio, and the Southern Ute Tribe is imperative. As County Commissioner, Wally White will work toward creating an environment that supports the positive exchange of ideas that result in a County vision beneficial to the citizens of La Plata County.

If elected, Wally White will continue to represent your views and concerns at the County Commission. Wally welcomes you to share your opinions as to what the priorities of La Plata County should be. To do so, click on the button to the right.
