DURANGO — “A leader has a desire to try to represent all the people in a community. A leader can take a myriad of different views and combine them in a way that benefits the greater good of the community,” La Plata County Commissioner Wally White explained.
Since White moved to Durango in 1979, he has done just that by being an active leader and advocate. He’s served on various boards, including the Board of Housing Solutions (Affordable Housing), the LEAD Board, the La Plata County Fair Grounds Commission and the Weed and Rodent Board. Most recently, White, a Democrat, was elected as the representative for District 3 (Eastern La Plata County) on the county commission, and began his four year term in January 2005
“It was the right situation at the right time in my own life,” White said of his decision to run. “I had never considered running for office. I was more of a community activist. But so far it seems to be a good fit.”
White believes the commissioners face a number of issues. One of the major issues is the exploding growth of La Plata County. The commissioners are in the process of making improvements to the current land use code. (The land use code is a set of regulations regarding new development, zoning and other related processes, which is used by county officials to insure the general welfare of present and future residents.)
“The county never had a long range plan or vision [regarding growth],” White said.
A desire to “develop better guidelines” within the land use code was an issue White recognized during his campaign for commissioner. “It is a fact that runaway growth does not create community. Unchecked growth consumes our natural resources, water, land, wildlife habitat — the things that make this county a beautiful place to live in as well as a magnet for others seeking to relocate here,” stated White’s campaign website.
The growth of the county puts pressure on other resources, such as water. White feels there may be a need for a rural water district down the road and the board is considering the possibility of that now.
